On a day long trek in scenic, but rugged terrain riders must meet criteria for their own and our horses' safety.
To thoroughly enjoy your stay we suggest that your riding ability be at an intermediate level due to the terrain and lengths of our rides, however a strong novice rider could be accommodated for short rides. Such as husbands who will be riding one day and golfing the other three. Sometimes we are willing to waive the 200 lb. limit for a tall, experienced rider who is capable of riding light on the horse's back.
Beginner: A rider who has limited experience, is unable to post the trot and does not canter.
Novice: A rider who is capable of mounting and dismounting unassisted, capable of applying basic aids, comfortable and in control at the walk, moderate length posting trots, and short canters.
Intermediate: A rider who has a firm seat, is confident and in control at all paces (including posting trots, two point canters and gallops), but does not ride regularly.
Strong Intermediate: An intermediate rider who is currently riding regularly and is comfortable in the saddle for at least 6 hours per day.
Advanced: All of the above, plus an independent seat, soft hands, and capable of handling a spirited horse in open country.
Children: Children must be 11 years of age and have some riding knowledge and experience.
The trek guide has full authority to exclude a rider from a trip for inability to ride or behavior which endangers the other riders or the horses. No refunds will be made under these circumstances. In addition to our own well trained stock, we foster rescued horses. Although clients ride our seasoned ranch horses, sometimes a foster horse excels in its training and is available for clients during their stay. In our program our fostered horses receive 6 months of solid riding which will keep them physically and mentally fit and better candidates for adoption. All of our horses have been trained in trail riding skills and manners; however, they do have a mind of their own.
